What is Breast Cancer?

Breast Cancer Awareness

Breast cancer occurs when abnormal cells in the breast grow uncontrollably and form a tumor. It can start in different parts of the breast such as the milk ducts or lobules. With early detection and the right treatment plan, many patients respond well and can achieve excellent outcomes.

Treatment usually depends on the type and stage of cancer and may include surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, hormonal therapy, targeted therapy, or immunotherapy. The focus is to provide a personalized, safe, and effective treatment plan for each patient.

Common Symptoms & When to Consult

If you notice any persistent changes in the breast, it is important to consult an oncologist for evaluation. Many symptoms can be due to non-cancer causes, but timely check-up helps in early diagnosis.

  • Breast lump: A new lump in the breast or underarm area.
  • Change in size or shape: One breast becoming noticeably larger or different.
  • Nipple changes: Nipple retraction, discharge (especially blood-stained), or crusting.
  • Skin changes: Dimpling, redness, thickening, or “orange peel” appearance.
  • Pain or discomfort: Persistent breast pain that does not improve.
  • Swelling: Swelling of part or all of the breast.
  • Non-healing sores: Any wound or ulcer over the breast not healing properly.

Early diagnosis improves treatment success. Screening methods like clinical breast exam, mammography, ultrasound, and biopsy (if required) help confirm the diagnosis and guide treatment planning.
